While you can’t fly to Redang Island your best option is to fly to the nearest airport to Redang Island which is Kuala Terengganu. If you can fly here, getting from Kuala Terengganu Airport to Redang Island is quite straightforward. The simplest way to travel to Redang is by Berjaya Air which offers direct flights to the island from Kuala Lumpur's Subang Airport and Singapore's Changi Airport Budget Terminal. Other visitors should head for Shahbandar jetty in Kuala Terengganu (KT) or Merang jetty depending on which ferry they are taking.

This is a stunning part of the world. Which can make getting to the Redang Island jetty more difficult. Especially when there is no bridge and barely any flights like in case of Redang. The upside is that this keeps things less busy and developed and getting from Kuala Terengganu to Redang Island is relatively easy — you just need to know how to do it!

When it comes to taking a ferry from Kuala Terengganu to Redang Island, there are two options. We were going to stay at the Taaras before they quoted a ridiculous price to use their ferry to Pulau Redang. Make sure you are clear which Kuala Terengganu jetty to Redang port you need to go to. The Merang jetty to Redang time is around minutes, depending on exactly where you are going on the island. Public ferries can drop off at various places. Click here to see the options and times. Travelling from Shah Bandar Jetty to Redang is generally the most convenient option since the jetty is located in Kuala Terengganu, which is a transport hub. In fact, you can even walk here from the central part of the city although I recommend taking a taxi with luggage in the heat.

The downside is that the ShahBandar jetty ticket is usually more expensive and the ShahBandar jetty schedule seems to be limited with ferries running less often. Straight ahead of you is the general ticket booth for a boat from Kuala Terengganu to Redang as well as one to the left see photo above.

Resort ticket booths are behind the general one. If you are getting your Pulau Redang ferry ticket via your resort, walk straight ahead and they each have a booth lining the back area.

The Kuala Terengganu to Redang ferry time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes or may take up to 2 hours depending on the weather. Our boat boarded about 15 minutes before the scheduled time. You exit from the lobby area to walk to the boat, which is a bit of a walk, including across a car park.

The ferry itself is comfortable. We caught the Laguna Redang one and it was all very smooth sailing. Arriving at the jetty 30 minutes early is plenty of time if you already have a ticket.

I recommend you take a taxi to either jetty mentioned above and then the ferry process is the same as described above. Taxis are waiting at the airport, or you can use the Grab app to get one. Merang Jetty has more ferries throughout the day, so this can be the best option when working out how to get from Kuala Terengganu airport to Redang jetty.

There is also a bus that leaves the airport hourly to Merang Jetty which costs RM4. When going in reverse, how to go Pulau Redang from Kuala Terengganu airport is the same. Catch the ferry back to the mainland and there will be taxis waiting to take you to the airport. If you have time though, I do recommend a stopover in Kuala Terengganu. The ShahBandar jetty parking is minimal at the jetty itself, but there are other lots a short walk away. The ferries to Redang Island leave from two different places — so you have two options when it comes to how to go Pulau Redang from KL.

I cover both options of how to go Redang from KL below so you can choose the best route for you. Going via Shahbandar Jetty in Kuala Terengganu can be more convenient if you are taking the bus to travel here, but more ferries run from Merang. The Laguna Redang ferry. Other ones are similar.

The drive to Redang from KL takes about 4. The alternative to driving yourself is to hire a private taxi for the KL to Redang drive — or more accurately the drive from KL to Shanbandar jetty. Once in Kuala Terengganu, travellers need to make their way to the Merang jetty.

The cheapest way is to take a bus ride. These bus tickets cost RM4 and leave on an hourly basis. Although cheaper, the bus is not always the most convenient option when it comes to how to go Redang Island from KL. The reason being is that they run on an hourly basis. Taking a taxi is much easier, especially if using the Grab app, which works similarly to Uber, as you can order the taxi when you need it.

Despite the convenience, a taxi is more expensive in terms of how to travel to Redang Island. A trip will cost you about RM60 and can take up to minutes to arrive at Merang Jetty. The bus stops at Merang Jetty after driving 5.

If you have a car, the KL to Pulau Redang by car journey will take around 4. The tickets cost RM55 for adults. If you are heading from Redang to Kuala Lumpur, you can repeat the same steps that you took to get there — but in the reverse order. You can choose to take the ferry back to either Shahbandar Jetty or Merang Jetty. From here, you have the option of taking a bus or taxi to the airport or driving through to Kuala Lumpur in a car or bus.

Redang Island is not only one of the most beautiful islands in Malaysia, but it is also one of the easiest to visit. If your budget is slightly tighter, then the cheapest option is to take a bus from KL to Redang via Kuala Terengganu. You have the choice of Merang Jetty with more options, or the possibly more convenient Shahbandar Jetty which has fewer options.
