What is Tools?
Tools of the Mind is a research-based early childhood model combining teacher professional development with a comprehensive innovative curriculum that helps young children to develop the cognitive, social-emotional, self-regulatory, and foundational academic skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. Tools of the Mind gives teachers the tools to ensure every child becomes a successful learner, developing the underlying cognitive, social and emotional skills needed to reach his or her highest potential. Transforming early childhood teaching and learning for almost a quarter of a century, Tools of the Mind is rooted in Vygotskian theory and informed by cutting-edge neuroscience research. The Tools of the Mind oroject began inwhen Dr. Elena Bodrova and Dr.
Bodrova came to the United States from Russia, where she studied with students and colleagues of Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, and applied Vygotskian-based teaching methods in preschool and kindergarten classrooms.
When applied to children, this means that to successfully function in school and beyond, children need to learn more than a set of facts and skills. They need to master a set of mental tools—tools of the mind. According to Vygotsky, until children learn to use mental tools, their learning is largely controlled by the environment; they attend only to the things that are brightest or loudest, and they can remember something only if has been repeated many times.

Leong and Bodrova was to create Vygotskian-based instructional strategies that would work in U. We have many great Tools PreK and K classrooms across the country. Parents have led the initiative to bring Tools to several of our great programs! Tools for Parents Resources.
Our approach has many small group activities, each led by a teacher, as well as activities in which teachers circulate to provide scaffolding to each child, individualizing instruction. Classroom practices, management, and individualized instruction are all informed by the same theoretical underpinnings and knowledge of child development.
For this reason, we train both lead and assistant teachers together and consider both instructional leaders in the classroom. Our curriculum is comprehensive, with a unifying approach to teaching and learning woven across all activities. It includes literacy, math and science — but with a Tools twist; we embed self-regulation and executive functions practice in the design of our activities. In Tools Kindergarten program, we do have an option to integrate district math curricula into our approach, but our research to date has been on the complete Tools program implemented across all activities and teaching practices.

This project, the result of collaboration between Russian and American education researchers, used the Vygotskian approach to create a series of tools or strategies for teachers to use in supporting the development of early literacy, including meta-cognitive and meta-linguistic skills as well as other foundational literacy skills.
The monograph describes the development and piloting of the project, including the creation of the Early Learning Advisor, a computerized assessment system that provides direct advice to teachers on the developmental levels of their individual students, and gives them suggestions about how to apply the innovative teaching concepts in their daily work in the classroom.
